Gursky Horse & Cattle Company was founded 20 years ago producing beef cattle
on native range. In our day to day needs we sought horses with wide long hips, flat
chests with ample width, good withers, a wide well developed loin, deep heart,
low hocks and tail head, standing on a stout straight bone with moderate sized feet.
These horses needed to turn easily and efficiently; be running at full speed in 2 or 3
strides, stick their rear in the ground and stop right now. They needed to really watch
a cow, rate a cow running through brush, over rocks, then stop and hold that cow
once she was roped. They needed to enjoy their work, like people, be quiet
around cattle but liven up to do their job the moment they were asked. We went
through a lot of geldings. If they were fast enough, they wouldn't get as quiet as I
liked. If they stopped hard they might get sore and have trouble staying sound. If
they would really watch a cow they might not handle her on a rope. We identified
a problem, we needed a solution.
The cutting horse, reining horse and running horse blood lines weren't
fitting the bill. The Old Foundation Quarter Horse bloodlines had a lot to
offer. Some of the area ranches had high percentage Poco Bueno, Jesse James,
Joe Hancock, Driftwood and Hollywood Gold Bloodlines and I made a deal to
break 2 colts for the pick of 1 filly for a lot of these ranches. We would use
the fillies on the ranch and breed the ones with the total package. I acquired
stallions with all the traits I was looking for and started my breeding program.
I strive to produce horses that will make a man a living on the ranch or in the
roping pen.
Today we run 50 broodmares, starting all of the colts between 2 and 3
years of age. All of our colts are started on the ranch with a foundation in
reining and roping, using the old traditions handed down from generations of
horsemen.
